A Houston high school student skipped out on her own graduation party — to celebrate a homeless shelter for women and children.
Leanne Carrasco, who graduated from Waltrip High School on Saturday, marked her personal milestone the next day by serving pizza at the Star of Hope Family Development Center, news station KTRK reported.
“I didn’t want to spend so much money either on a party, when that’s just gonna last a day,” Carrasco told the station. “I feel that if I’m able to give to the people, that will last more than a day.”
With help from some pals, Carrasco handed out 95 pizzas and 400 care packages, which included toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand wipes and deodorant.
“I think you should always know you’re lucky to have what you have,” Carrasco said. “Don’t take that for granted and continue to give.”
Sunday’s pizza party was such a hit with the shelter’s residents that they gave her a standing ovation.
“[The teens] had respect for these people. They saw them as peers,” Star of Hope spokesman Scott Arthur told the news station. “The residents saw this as a validation that people do care.”
