In a sudden about-face, Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday that she will testify before the House committee investigating the Benghazi attacks — but committee officials denied that the terms of her appearance had been set.

A Clinton campaign spokesman said the former secretary of state will appear for a grilling on Oct. 22.

But Jamal Ware, spokesman for the Republican-led House’s Select Committee on Benghazi, said Saturday that Clinton was “still negotiating conditions” of her testimony, including whether questions about the private server can be asked.

“Her e-mail arrangement clearly falls within the scope of the Select Committee’s jurisdiction,” Ware said.

The announcement came while controversy continued to swirl over findings that her e-mail server handled State Department secrets, despite her repeated denials that any classified information was compromised by her lax electronic security habits.

If Clinton testifies just four months before the first presidential nominating contests in Iowa and New Hampshire, both the e-mail scandal and Benghazi will reverberate throughout the 2016 race.
