Hong Kong is facing a toilet paper shortage as Chinese factories struggle to meet demand amid the coronavirus outbreak, according to a report.

Shoppers were photographed walking past bare supermarket shelves usually stocked with toilet paper.

The cause of the shortage is unclear, but unconfirmed reports on social media suggested that it stemmed from production holdups at supply chains in mainland China, according to Bloomberg.

Some Chinese cities remain under quarantine, while thousands of people are sick from the coronavirus, impacting its workforce.

Vinda International Holdings, which produces toilet paper, said its factories in mainland China will resume operations next week.

“Supermarkets and other retail outlets are now restocking with our products to ensure a sufficient supply,” the company said.

Hong Kong’s toilet paper shortage comes as face masks, condoms and hand sanitizer were reported to be running low, the outlet reported.
