Lei down that phone!

Crossing the street while texting in Honolulu is now illegal, thanks to a new law that went into effect Wednesday in Hawaii’s largest city.

Violators can be slapped with a fine of up to $35 for their first offense.

But those who continue to use their phone and cross the street will be fined up to $99.

The cellphone ban, which is intended to stop distracted people from strolling out into traffic, has made Honolulu the first US city to fine pedestrians for using their phones.

“This is really milestone legislation that sets the bar high for safety,” City Councilman Brandon Elefante, who proposed the bill in July, told the New York Times.
