A heartbroken Alabama woman was left reeling after she discovered the her brother’s remains just a few yards from where his wrecked car was found over three months ago — and accused law enforcement of failing to properly search the area at the time of the accident.

Katie Lewis located the body of her brother, Kody Martin, about 20 steps into the woods off County Road 55 in Cullman on Sept. 2, she told The Post.

“It was awful. It was something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy,” she said of the moment she and her brother-in-law located the remains.

The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and confirmed the discovery.

Lewis reported Martin missing on July 26, she told The Post.

She last saw him on May 18.

Over Labor Day weekend, she finally heard from an eagle-eyed tow truck company that said they removed her brother’s wrecked car from where it was found crashed into a telephone pole on May 30.

At that point, Lewis said, she knew she had to go check out the scene herself.

“He had been actively missing 104 days. So there’s no way I could have not just went out there,” she said.

Lewis and her brother-in-law spent about 30 minutes looking through the woods before they found the remains, where were later identified through dental records.

His cause of death will be listed as blunt force injuries from the car accident, the Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn told The Post.

Alabama State Troopers responded to the scene of the initial accident, Lewis said.

She accused the first responders of not searching the area thoroughly enough, and is now looking to get a lawyer to investigate the situation further.

The State Troopers did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for a comment on the incident.
