At least 18 COVID-19 patients were killed in India when a hospital fire broke out Saturday, amid a devastating second wave of infections ravaging the country.

Dozens of other patients at the Welfare Hospital in Bharuch were rescued, police said.

The flames broke out in the COVID-19 ward, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation, according to officials.

The tragedy comes a week after 13 COVID-19 patients died when an intensive care unit outside Mumbai caught fire.

On Friday, the State Department implemented travel restrictions to India over the surging coronavirus cases there.

The country’s hospitals and morgues have been overflowing, while families scramble for increasingly scarce medicines and oxygen.
