A Pennsylvania prosecutor is reviewing the death of a child whose temperature reached 107 degrees when he was put under a heated blanket at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

Dauphin County DA Edward Marsico, Jr. said Monday that his office will look into the circumstances surrounding the death of the 6-year-old. The state Department of Health cited the hospital last week for not properly monitoring the child, Penn Live reported.

State officials said the boy was admitted to the hospital with a temperature of 89.4 degrees in January and was wrapped in a special heating blanket called a Bair Hugger to raise his temperature.

The health department cited the hospital for not properly monitoring the child while he was under the heating device and for not immediately reporting his death.

Officials said no records of the boy’s temperature were taken during a 10-hour period, though he was supposed to be checked on every two hours, and the hospital only reported the “serious event,” 77 days later.

Pennsylvania law requires hospitals to report a death or serious injury within 24 hours.

Marsico said his investigators would look into the medical staff’s actions and whether the child suffered any injuries before being admitted.

The hospital said it had also launched its own investigation into the death and said the child had “ongoing, complex and life-limiting health issues.”
