The House on Thursday defeated the conservative immigration bill backed by President Trump on a 231-193 vote — and postponed a vote on a compromise bill until Friday.

The conservative bill would not have granted a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, who arrived in the country illegally as children.

It would also have curbed legal immigration and bolstered border security by funding Trump’s border wall.

The compromise bill — which has no chance of passing the Senate, where at least nine Democrats would have to join the GOP majority to move it — included an opportunity for citizenship for the Dreamers.

It also provided $25 billion for Trump’s wall, restricted legal immigration and contained language requiring Homeland Security to keep migrant families together while they’re being processed for illegal entry to the US.

GOP Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy told NBC News that the compromise vote was delayed so that members could have more time to review the legislation.

Democrats oppose both measures as overly harsh.
