Democratic longshot Kendra Horn carried Oklahoma’s 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, turning the Oklahoma City House seat blue for the first time in nearly a half-century.

Horn, a lawyer, upended GOP incumbent Rep. Steve Russell in a shocker that few prognosticators saw coming in the deep-red state.

“I am so excited and inspired by all of our amazing supporters and volunteers, all of the work that we put in to change the conversation and the way that we’re running campaigns,” Horn told KOCO-TV after the stunning decision.

“It’s a historic election for a number of reasons. I am the third woman ever elected to represent Oklahoma in Congress, and we are talking about issues that are so important.”

She’s also the first Democrat to represent Oklahoma City since John Jarman switched parties from Democratic to Republican in 1975.
