House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) will subpoena US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to compel her testimony later this month on the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

“While the Secret Service confirmed Director Cheatle was expected to appear for the Committee’s hearing on July 22, to head off any attempt by DHS to backtrack on her appearance, the Chairman will issue a subpoena for her to attend,” a spokesperson for the panel said in a statement.

“Director Cheatle must answer to Congress and the American people about the historic failure that occurred on her watch,” the Oversight rep insisted.

The committee spokesperson also revealed that the Secret Service had indefinitely postponed a briefing of all Oversight panel members that had been scheduled for Tuesday.

“The Oversight Committee has a long record of bipartisan oversight of the Secret Service and the unprofessionalism we are witnessing from current DHS leadership is unacceptable,” the spokesperson thundered.

US Secret Service referred The Post to the Department of Homeland Security for comment. The agency did not immediately respond.

Trump, 78, came within an inch of death during a campaign rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday after Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old gunman, was able to elude law enforcement and fire onto the fairgrounds, striking the 45th president in the right ear, killing another attendee and wounding two others.

Asked Tuesday morning by The Post whether Cheatle should resign over the security breakdown, House Republican conference chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) said that the planned Oversight briefing would have been “the first opportunity” to ask “very important and tough questions.”

“The American people need 100% transparency — and they need it fast,” Stefanik emphasized.

“Once we have that opportunity to ask those questions, then I think the decision will be made,” she predicted.

The House Homeland Security Committee confirmed another hearing will be held July 23 with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI Director Christopher Wray and Cheatle.

“The American people want answers on what happened Saturday in Pennsylvania,” Homeland Security chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.) demanded in a statement. 

“Secretary Mayorkas and Director Cheatle are responsible for the department and the agency charged with securing our homeland and protecting our nation’s chief executives and candidates, while Director Wray leads the agency with the vital responsibility of investigating this attempted assassination,” he said.

Mayorkas has said the would-be assassin should never have had “a direct line of sight like that to the former president” — but reports since the incident have revealed alarming warnings about Crooks’ presence on the roof of the manufacturing plant just 130 yards from Trump almost a half hour before the shooting.

Green and Homeland Security ranking member Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) were briefed by FBI Executive Assistant Director Robert Wells on Monday — and informed that the bureau was probing the shooting as an act of “potential domestic terrorism,” a panel spokesperson said.

“The FBI is focused on the gunman, his motive, any potential associations, building a timeline of events, and related matters, while the Secret Service is conducting a separate review of its security protocol,” the rep added, noting that almost 100 interviews have been conducted and agents had been able to access Crooks’ phone.
