Two hikers looking for snakes in California instead found something a lot scarier — human remains, authorities said.

The skull and bones were discovered Wednesday afternoon off a trail in the Fanita Ranch area, news station KSWB reported.

“A skull popped up and a spine and everything else so — it was kind of spread out,” hiker Ryley Becker told the outlet.

Travis Raszkowski, who was hiking with Becker, said more bones were scattered a few feet away from the skull.

“There’s some leg bones across a bush 10 feet over or so,” Raszkowski told the outlet.

San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said homicide detectives are leading the investigation, news station KNSD reported.

The remains have not been identified, and a cause of death has not been determined, authorities said.
