An Arkansas high school student found decaying human remains on the school’s campus this week — and authorities believe they had been there for years, according to a new report.

The student at Riverview High School in Searcy spotted the remains in a wooded area behind the school’s administration building around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday and reported it to police, the district said in a Facebook post.

The remains have not been identified, the district said.

They are being sent to the state crime lab for investigation, and the Searcy Police Department is working on leads from an out-of-state missing person investigation, authorities told local station FOX 16.

“Praying that they identify the victim so his/her family can start the next part of the grieving process,” Samantha Dawn wrote on the district’s Facebook page. “Sad day.”

“Praying for the student that found them,” added Leslie Christine. “And all those affected and hurt by this.”

No further details were immediately released.
