Officials in the UK are investigating possible ties to Italy in a coronavirus “super-spreader” believed to be the country’s first case.
The hunt for Patient Zero led authorities to a man in Surrey, the first Brit to come down with the infectious disease, the Sunday Times of London reported.
Authorities suspect his sickness could have originated in Italy, because his partner — who has also developed symptoms — works with at least one person who recently returned to the UK from Italy, according to the paper.
It was unclear whether the Surrey man had contracted the virus “directly or indirectly,” UK Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said. The hospital where he was diagnosed was closed for a deep-cleaning Friday.
So far, 23 British citizens have been infected with the virus. Italy had at least 1,128 cases as of Saturday afternoon and 29 deaths.
The UK reported its first death Friday, a man in his 70s who was a passenger on the troubled Diamond Princess cruise ship. The United States also had its first death, a man in his 50s in a long-term care facility with underlying health problems, officials said.
