Hurricane Delta was lashing the US Gulf Coast on the brink of making landfall in central Louisiana Friday night.

The National Hurricane Center’s latest update — at 4 p.m. Eastern time — said the Category 2 system was only 50 miles off the coast of Cameron, La., and was bearing down on the central Louisiana city at a speed of 14 miles per hour.

Gusts of 60 miles per hour were already blasting the Louisiana and Texas coasts, the NHC said — a region still recovering from Hurricane Laura in August.

It is expected to create a “life threatening” storm surge when it does hit in the late afternoon or early evening, forecasters have said.

Already, waves reaching 35 feet have been recorded offshore by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, CNN reported.

Delta may also spawn tornadoes and swamp the region with up to 10 inches of rain on Saturday.
