Hurricane Florence has claimed the lives of at least five people, including a mother and her infant son who were crushed to death by a tree, police said.

The Category 1 storm, which throttled North Carolina, also left two elderly men dead — one of whom got electrocuted while trying to connect a pair of extension cords outside in the rain, according to emergency officials.

“Our hearts go out to the families of those who died in this storm,” Gov. Roy Cooper said in a statement Friday. “Hurricane Florence is going to continue its violent grind across our state for days. Be extremely careful and stay alert.”

The powerful storm has caused countless trees to collapse, including the one that killed the mother and her son. They were both inside their home in Wilmington on Friday afternoon when it came crashing down into it, cops said.

A man, identified as the father, was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment, according to police.

In Kinston, a 77-year-old man died from a fall after being blown down by Florence’s 90 mph winds. Relatives told authorities he was checking on his hunting dogs at the time.

A fifth person reportedly died of a heart attack inside her Hampstead home as the storm rolled in.

Pender County Emergency Management director Tom Collins told local station WWAY 3 that emergency workers were unable to reach her because of a downed tree in the road.
