Hurricane Michael intensified to a Category 2 storm Tuesday morning as it churned through the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida — where it could make landfall Wednesday as a Category 3 storm.

Packing top winds of 110 mph, Michael spent the morning gaining strength in the gulf’s warm waters as it barreled at 12 mph toward the Florida Panhandle, where roughly 120,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders.

Michael is expected to hit early Wednesday, then carve a path of destruction first through Florida, then northeast through Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia.

In addition to several low-lying areas in the Panhandle, states of emergency have been declared for 92 counties across Georgia, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Shoreline communities within Michael’s monstrous reach could see 12 feet of storm surge, while areas inland could be soaked with a foot of rainfall, flash flooding and possible tornadoes.

Officials urged residents in Michael’s projected path to evacuate before it’s too late — or risk being cut off from rescue.

“If you decide to stay in your home and a tree falls on your house or the storm surge catches you and you’re now calling for help, there’s no one that can respond to you,” said Sheriff David Morgan, of the Panhandle’s Escambia County.

President Trump said Tuesday that he had spoken with honchos at FEMA, as well as Florida Gov. Rick Scott, and is confident that “We’re very well-prepared.”

“I think that hopefully we’ll get lucky, but maybe that won’t happen,” Trump said. “But we’re prepared.”

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum helped residents in Florida’s capital fill sandbags as the monster storm loomed.

“There’s nothing between us and this storm but warm water,” he said. “I think that’s what terrifies us about the potential impacts.”
