Hurricane Zeta strengthened into a Category 2 storm and made landfall along the coast of southeastern Louisiana Wednesday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm, packing fierce winds of up to 110 miles-per-hour, made landfall at around 4 p.m. local time, near the village of Cocodrie, LA.

According to the National Hurricane Center, a life-threatening storm surge was imminent along portions of the southeastern Louisiana and Mississippi coasts.

The hurricane, which is moving at a speed of 20 miles-per-hour, is expected to move close to the Mississippi coast on Wednesday evening, and then move across the southeastern and eastern US on Thursday.
