The Trump administration has opened a new front in its immigration crackdown, targeting illegal Somali immigrants in Minneapolis with a push of more than 100 ICE agents.

Immigration agents are targeting as many as 500 Somalis illegally in the city, which is home to the US’ largest population from the war-torn East African nation, estimated at over 80,000, according to several reports.

The operation follows the stunning revelation that scammers in the Somali migrant community have engaged in massive fraud — costing Minnesota taxpayers some $1 billion — which happened right under the nose of Gov. Tim Walz, according to the state’s Department of Human Services.

President Trump slammed Somali illegal immigrants during a White House cabinet meeting Tuesday, saying, “I don’t want them in our country,” and adding that Somalia, one of the poorest countries on the planet, “stinks.”

He also slammed US Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) — who was born in Somalia — as “garbage.”

At the same meeting, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revealed that half of all visa holders in the state had engaged in some form of immigration fraud, which was determined after US Citizenship and Immigration Services visited 1,000 immigrant households over a two-week period.

“Officers encountered blatant marriage fraud, visa overstay, people claiming to work at businesses that can’t be found, forged documents, abuse of the H1B visa system, abuse of the F1 visa, and many other discrepancies,” USCIS Director Joseph B. Edlow told reporters after the operation concluded.

Wednesday’s enforcement operation was decried as “kidnapping” by local officials, who stoked animosity and fear in immigration agents were targeting Somalis for no reason other than their nationality.

Failed Minneapolis mayoral candidate and Somali immigrant Omar Fateh warned on X ahead of Wednesday’s enforcement operation that ICE has been “abducting our neighbors from the streets and homes.”

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara urged residents to call 911 if they see ICE agents “kidnapping” people during the immigration sweep at a press conference Tuesday.

At the same press conference, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey accused immigration agents of being prone to “mistakes,” and said “American citizens will be detained” in the operation.

Walz condemned the enforcement action as a “PR stunt,” and claimed ICE would “indiscriminately target Americans.”

The Department of Homeland Security insisted the operation was not targeting specific communities with its latest raids, which as of Tuesday expanded to include a stepped-up presence of ICE agents in New Orleans.

“Every day, ICE enforces the laws of the nation across the country. What makes someone a target of ICE is not their race or ethnicity, but the fact that they are in the country illegally. We do not discuss future or potential operations,” Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement Wednesday as the operation reportedly got underway.

Meanwhile, DHS launched an “enhanced” enforcement blitz in New Orleans Wednesday in an operation dubbed “Operation Catahoula Crunch” led by Border Patrol and executed in coordination with the FBI and Louisiana State Police.

Some 250 border agents were deployed, according to several reports, with the goal of arresting 5,000 people in Louisiana and Mississippi.

In a press release announcing the operation, DHS said it was “targeting criminal illegal aliens roaming free thanks to sanctuary policies that force local authorities to ignore US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrest detainers.”
