A woman in India was gang-raped on the orders of her village council because she fell in love with a man from a different ethnic group, authorities said.

A dozen suspects were arrested in the attack on the 20-year-old victim, who told police she lost count of how many men violated her.

The horror began when a Muslim man was caught proposing to her, authorities said. Locals tied the couple to a tree and ordered them to pay a $400 fine.

The woman’s family said they were too poor to make the payment, so the town council ordered the gang rape.
