A 13-year-old girl has died in Indiana after sticking her head out the window of a moving car and striking a utility pole, police said.
Kelly Hume leaned out the window of the vehicle driven by her 18-year-old sister Saturday night when it went off the road and down a steep incline in Crown Point, the Northwest Indiana Times reported.
The girl somehow struck a utility pole and was thrown from the car, the outlet reported. She died from blunt-force trauma.
“The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Unit is conducting traffic reconstruction of this incident, and the investigation continues,” Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this extremely difficult time.”
Authorities said they’re looking into whether the use of a cellphone may have played a role in the fatal incident.
The circumstances surrounding the death, including possible negligence, are still under investigation, authorities said.
