The overall rate of positive cases had dropped to 19.8 percent this week from 21.9 percent last week.

The virus was still spreading quickly in rural areas and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday warned people to take extra precautions.

Desperate to ward off the virus, some Indians have begun using fake cures such as lemon juice in their eyes and a paste of cow dung and urine on their bodies.
