One of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte students wounded when a gunman opened fire in her classroom this week is set to walk across the stage at her graduation ceremony, the school announced.

Emily Houpt, 23, of Charlotte, will attend the May 11 commencement ceremony and receive her degree in international studies, school chancellor Phil Dubois told the Charlotte Observer.

“We are absolutely delighted that Emily appears able to walk across the stage,” Dubois said, adding that Houpt’s mother told him her daughter had “worked so hard” to get her diploma.

Houpt was still at the hospital Thursday, the Observer reported. But Dubois said special seating would be provided for Houpt and her family at the on-campus arena where the ceremony is being held.

Houpt was recently named a spring intern for the World Affairs Council of Charlotte. She has traveled around the world — to Costa Rica, and then to various parts of Europe, according to her bio on the organization’s website.

“I keenly follow the international news cycle and American politics to keep myself informed and to identify the civil and political rights that are infringed upon by different governments,” she wrote on her LinkedIn page. “My goal is to find a position with an organization that seeks to protect human rights in any way, be it through advocacy or service.”

Students Ellis Parlier, 19, of Midland, and Riley Howell, 21, of Waynesville, were killed during the rampage on the last day of classes Tuesday.

Rami Alramadhan, 20, of Saihat, Saudia Arabia, and Apex, NC, residents Sean Dehart, 20, and Drew Pescaro, 19, were also wounded.

The alleged shooter, Tyson Andrew Terrell, 22, was charged with two counts of murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, one count of having a gun on education property and one count of discharging a firearm on education property.
