A suspected burglar fatally stabbed a homeowner’s dog before falling asleep in a Chicago home, police said.

The homeowner, Joseph Sneed, returned home late Wednesday to his residence in the 2300 block of West Maypole Avenue in the city’s West Town section and found his 12-year-old pit bull, Carmela, fatally stabbed and an intruder sleeping in a second-floor bedroom, WGN reports.

Police said the unidentified suspect broke into the home via a second-floor window and then stabbed the dog when it confronted him. He then fell asleep upstairs, police said.

“He was a big guy,” Sneed told the Chicago Tribune. “He was in shorts and loafers.”

Sneed said he owned Carmela since she was a puppy and slept with the animal most nights in his bed.

“It hurts,” Sneed told the newspaper.

Charges against the suspect were pending on Thursday.
