Iran and China have inked a longterm accord.

The 25-year “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” is wide ranging and said to cover oil, mining, transportation, agriculture and industrial development.

The deal was formalized in a ceremony in Tehran on Saturday attended by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

“Relations between the two countries have now reached the level of strategic partnership and China seeks to comprehensively improve relations with Iran,” Wang said in a statement, according to Reuters. “Our relations with Iran will not be affected by the current situation, but will be permanent and strategic.”

A return to crippling sanctions during the Trump administration has forced Iran to seek out other international partners for development. The United States under President Biden is keenly interested in re-engaging Iran, something their new partnership with Beijing may complicate.
