Iran is continuing to arrest and jail young women for the “crime” of posting videos of themselves dancing.

At least three women were detained earlier this month, according to the French news site France24

Each had tens of thousands of followers on social media, and had posted images of themselves “shuffle dancing,” described as a club dance featuring repeated shuffling of the feet inwards and outwards.

State media reported that the three were among a larger group of women being prosecuted for “obscene content creation.”

The three, Sahra Afsharian, Sara Shariatmadari and Niloufar Motiei, were being held in the notorious Qarchak Prison near Tehran.

YouTube footage from 2017 shows Afsharian dancing and twirling joyfully while fully clothed and wearing a head scarf.

None of the other images of Afsharian dancing posted by France24 shows her exposed in any way remotely obscene.

In the past, women arrested after posting images of themselves that officials found offensive have been forced to make public “confessions” of their “immoral behavior.

In September 2018, two actors were detained for mixed-gender dancing during a theater production in Tehran of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

In 2014, six young Iranians who videotaped themselves dancing to “Happy” by Pharrell Williams were sentenced to being lashed 91 times each for ignoring Islamic norms.

The sentences were suspended, meaning they won’t be carried out unless the defendants were found guilty of additional crimes within the next three years.
