Iran and France wrapped up a prisoner swap Saturday when French academic Roland Marchal boarded a plane home.

Marchal was set to arrive in France midday after spending nearly nine months behind bars in Iran, Reuters reported.

France released Jalal Ruhollahnejad, an Iranian engineer wanted by U.S. authorities over alleged violations of U.S. sanctions against Tehran.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged Iran to also release French citizen Fariba Adelkhah, who also holds an Iranian passport.

On Thursday, Iran released US Navy veteran Michael White for medical reasons, the State Department said.  He must remain in Iran, however.

White, of California, had been in prison since 2018 for what Iranian officials described as insulting Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and posting private information online. He was sentenced to 13 years behind bars.

Iran has released about 85,000 prisoners as authorities try to clear crowded jails to stem the spread of coronavirus, which has ravaged the nation.
