A well-known Iranian TV newscaster has been released after being detained for 10 days by US authorities.
Marzieh Hashemi, 59, was held for days as a material witness in an unspecified case — a move that Iranian officials condemned as illegal.
The state-run English-language station she works for, Press TV, announced her release late Wednesday.
“The US government has released without charge Press TV anchor Marzieh Hashemi after 10 days of illegal detention,” said the report published on its website.
Hashemi, who was born Melanie Franklin in New Orleans and holds dual US-Iran citizenship, was arrested Jan. 13 at St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
She had been in the US visiting family.
“Finally, I’ve been released from jail,” she said in an audio message on Press TV. “I have a lot to say about what I’ve been through. We will talk about it later, God willing.”
While in custody, reports emerged that Hashemi allegedly was forced to remove her headscarf, worn as required under Islamic law.
On Friday, a US court said she was arrested but would be freed after giving testimony in an unspecified case. It’s unclear whether she did.
