The IRS said that taxpayers would have an extra day to file their 2017 returns after tech issues prevented some people from submitting their forms as the deadline approached Tuesday night.

“Taxpayers do not need to do anything to receive this extra time,” the IRS said in a statement announcing the extension.

The agency said that its systems were back online and working fine.

Earlier, the IRS reported a computer glitch with the program that handles returns filed electronically through such services as Turbo Tax.

Politicians on Capitol Hill said earlier on Tuesday that the inconvenience should prompt an extension.

“Tax Day is already a stressful time for millions of Americans, even when everything goes right,” Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass) said.

“Given this news, I hope that the IRS will make accommodations so that every taxpayer attempting to file today has a fair shot to do so without penalty.”
