Israel is warning that “another war” could break out in the region as the Lebanese terror group Hezbollah attacked an Israeli air base and the Jewish nation’s military killed one of the terrorists’ top commanders.
Col. Herzi Halevi, the Israeli military’s chief of staff, said over the weekend that the Israel Defense Force is increasing its pressure on Hezbollah, a key ally of the Palestinian terror group Hamas, which is battling Israel in Gaza after attacking on Oct. 7.
Halevi said Israel would either be effective in stopping Hezbollah’s ongoing barrage of rockets on its northern border “or we will get to another war.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu added, “I suggest that Hezbollah learn what Hamas has already learned in recent months: No terrorist is immune.
“We are determined to defend our citizens and to return the residents of the north to safety to their homes,” he told his cabinet.
The dire comments came as Israeli forces killed Wissam Hassan al-Tawil, the deputy head of a unit in Hezbollah’s Radwan force, in an airstrike Monday. The IDF has said Radwan is trying to infiltrate northern Israel.
Al-Tawil died alongside another Hezbollah fighter when their Honda SUV was struck, the terror group confirmed, saying the leader died “on the road to Jerusalem” — a phrase used for its fighters who are killed by Israeli forces.
An Israeli airstrike Monday killed senior Hezbollah commander Wissam al-Tawil. APLebanese security forces called the attack “a very painful strike” that will cause a “flare-up.”
But the IDF said its fighter jets were simply targeting Hezbollah infrastructure after the terrorist group launched about 40 rockets into Israel and struck its air traffic control base on Mount Meron, which forced thousands of Israelis in the north to evacuate.
The Israeli air base suffered some damage in the attack, but no one was killed.
After the attack, Netanyahu told IDF reservists that the country is ready to go to war with Hezbollah if the need arises.
“Of course, we prefer that this be done without a widespread campaign, but that will not stop us,” he said, according to the Times of Israel.
“We gave them an example of what is happening to their friends in the south; this is what will happen here in the north,” Netanyahu said, referencing Israel’s ground attack on Hamas strongholds in Gaza.
“We will do everything to restore security,” he added.

Israeli officials said its fighter jets were simply targeting Hezbollah infrastructure when it killed a terror commander in Lebanon.
Hezbollah officials said Monday that the attack on the air base was an “initial response” to an airstrike in Beirut last week that killed deputy political leader Saleh al-Arouri.
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s secretary-general, warned Israel in two televised addresses not to launch a full-scale war on Lebanon after al-Arouri’s death.
“Whoever thinks of war with us — in one word, he will regret it,” Nasrallah said ominously.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati also declared that Israel “aims to draw Lebanon” further into a war.
Nasser Kanaani, a rep for the foreign ministry of Iran — which is backing both Hamas and Hezbollah in their fights against Israel — said al-Arouri’s death would “undoubtedly ignite another surge in the veins of resistance and the motivation to fight against the Zionist occupiers — not only in Palestine, but also in the region and among all freedom-seekers worldwide.”

In an effort to prevent a full-out war between Israel and Lebanon, President Biden has dispatched some of his top aides to the Middle East.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to arrive Monday in Israel, where he will meet with top government officials Tuesday to discuss specific steps to “avoid escalation,” according to the Washington Post.
“It is in no one’s interest — not Israel’s, not the region’s, not the world’s — for this conflict to spread beyond Gaza,” Blinken spokesman Matthew Miller said Sunday.

US and French officials are also reportedly in discussion with the Lebanese government to have it take control of part of the Lebanon-Israel border rather than Hezbollah, which currently controls the area.
US officials concede Hezbollah is unlikely to agree to the deal.
