A young Israeli man was caught urinating on a memorial at Auschwitz this week, according to police.

The incident appeared to be the first of its kind — with Polish officials claiming they’d never seen an Israeli citizen relieve themselves at the Nazi death camp before.

According to local reports, the 19-year-old was taken into custody and interrogated for several hours before being released and hit with a $1,500 fine.

The punishment was viewed by some as a slap on the wrist, seeing how people who desecrate a monument or other public place in Poland commemorating a historical event are not only subject to a fine, but jail time, as well.

Auschwitz Memorial officials said on Twitter that the young man was caught urinating on the monument at site of the former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp — located between ruins of gas chambers and crematoria II and III.

“Sad & regrettable incident,” the Memorial tweeted.

“This act is entirely stupid and inexcusable,” wrote Jonny Daniels, founder of the Holocaust memorial and preservation group, “From the Depths.”

“It’s pretty obvious that this kid is an idiot.”
