Former FBI director James Comey, who left the Republican party in 2016, encouraged voters to choose Democrats in this year’s midterm elections.

“This Republican Congress has proven incapable of fulfilling the Founders’ design that ‘Ambition must … counteract ambition,'” Comey wrote in a tweet Tuesday night.

“All who believe in this country’s values must vote for Democrats this fall. Policy differences don’t matter right now. History has its eyes on us.”

Comey, who was fired by President Trump, was reacting to the president’s Monday press conference with Vladimir Putin where Trump refused to agree with US intelligence agencies.

While testifying to Congress in 2016, Comey said “I have been a registered Republican for most of my adult life, not registered any longer.”
