President Biden made a rare evening trip to Delaware to pay his respects — joined by his troubled son Hunter — to the family of a former Senate aide who died recently.
Biden spent more than 2 hours on the ground in Delaware on Tuesday, including about a half-hour visiting with the family of Norma Long at a funeral home in Wilmington.
Long worked for Biden’s Senate office “for over 30 years,” the White House said.
Biden then spent more than an hour at his nearby personal residence. The White House did not offer an explanation for that stop.
The trip was rare both for its brief duration — it originally was booked as 80 minutes on the ground in Delaware — and because presidents rarely take the time to make appearances at funeral homes.
Hunter Biden, 51, spends much of his time in Los Angeles. He joined his father after again incurring negative media attention.
According to a forthcoming book by Atlantic reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere, Hunter Biden tried to broker a deal in 2019 for a reality TV show featuring himself.
The first son drew some of the worst headlines for his father during last year’s presidential campaign, including for his work at Ukrainian gas company Burisma, where he earned a reported $83,000 per month while his father led the Obama administration’s Ukraine policy, despite no relevant industry experience.
A Delaware computer repairman in October gave The Post documents from a laptop formerly belonging to Hunter that detailed Joe Biden’s apparent connection to his son’s business deals in China and Ukraine, including a 2015 email that indicated that the younger Biden introduced a visiting Burisma exec to his dad.
President Biden paid respect to Norma Long with his son Hunter Biden. APA 2017 email recovered from the hard drive described a 10 percent set-aside for “the big guy” as part of a prospective deal involving a Chinese energy company. That deal did not materialize, but former Hunter Biden business partner Tony Bobulinski accused the elder Biden of being the “big guy.”
Additionally, a Senate report released in September said a firm linked to Hunter Biden received $3.5 million from Elena Baturina, the widow of former Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov. The senators said they did not know the purpose of the payment.
Hunter Biden in December said that he’s under federal investigation for possible tax fraud. Although his father has the constitutional right to let him off the hook for all federal crimes, Joe Biden has said repeatedly he will not intervene in Justice Department decisions.
