John Hinckley Jr.Splash NewsWould-be presidential assassin John Hinckley Jr. was spotted in public Sunday for the first time during one of his visits to Williamsburg from a mental hospital — picking up sandwiches and a drink from a Subway restaurant in Virginia.
Hinckley, 61, made the food run with his mom, Jo Ann Moore Hinckley, who stayed in the passenger seat while he ducked into the fast-food outlet.
Hinckley is set to visit Williamsburg for long stretches at a time and prepare for the full-time transition.
The portly, graying gunman wore a black T-shirt, fraying light-blue pants and a denim baseball cap bearing the name of Williamsburg, Va., where he’s under court order to live in his mother’s home for at least a year.
Hinckley was sent for treatment to St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, DC following his acquittal by reason of insanity in the March 30, 1981, shooting of then-President Ronald Reagan.
He was barred from contacting members of the late president’s family or actress Jodi Foster, with whom he became obsessed over her role as a teenage prostitute in the movie “Taxi Driver.”
Hinckley has said he was trying to impress Foster when he wounded Reagan, press secretary James Brady, a Secret Service agent and a cop in a chilling attack caught on film outside the Washington Hilton hotel.
