The man who shot President Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s can move out of his mother’s house in Virginia, a federal judge ruled Friday.

John Hinckley Jr., 63, will now be allowed to live within 75 miles of his mother’s house in the gated community of Williamsburg, US District Court Judge Paul L. Friedman ruled.

If he decides to move away from his mother, who is now in her 90s, Hinckley will need approval from his doctors.

He was confined for decades to St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington D.C. after trying to assassinate Reagan in the city in 1981.

Hinckley had gone crazy before the shooting and later said he shot Reagan to impress actress Jodie Foster.

He was found not guilty by reason of insanity for the attempted assassination.
