Justice Department officials on Tuesday announced a global opioid bust of drug traffickers on the darknet, arresting 179 people and seizing $6.5 million in cash.

The operation, dubbed “DisrupTor,” was carried out across the United States and Europe and resulted in the seizure of 274 kilograms (604 pounds) of drugs, including fentanyl, oxycodone, hydrocodone, methamphetamine, heroin, ecstasy, MDMA and other drugs containing addictive substances.

“DisrupTor,” which comes a year after the takedown of the “Wall Street Market,” believed to be one of the largest illegal online markets, also seized 63 firearms.

“Criminals selling fentanyl on the Darknet should pay attention to Operation DisrupTor,” Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen said in a statement. “The arrest of 179 of them in seven countries — with the seizure of their drug supplies and their money as well — shows that there will be no safe haven for drug dealing in cyberspace.”

The arrests include 121 in the US (including two in Canada), 42 in Germany, eight in the Netherlands, four in the United Kingdom, three in Austria and one in Sweden, the Justice Department said.

Investigations are continuing as officials try to identify others behind darknet accounts.
