Rachel Brand, the No. 3 official at the Justice Department, plans to abandon ship after just nine months on the job at a time when the White House and GOP lawmakers have repeatedly attacked the federal law enforcement community.

Brand, who was named associate attorney general last May, is bailing for a job in the private sector after working at Justice for the past three administrations, according to The New York Times, which first reported the story.

Brand could have found herself on the hot seat if Trump fired Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

If Rosenstein were canned, Brand would have been put in charge and could have faced pressure from Team Trump to fire Mueller or shut down his investigation.
