The Kennedy family held a virtual memorial service for Robert F. Kennedy’s granddaughter and her 8-year-old son, who drowned in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland earlier this month.

The Saturday Zoom service for Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, 40, the grand-niece of former President John F. Kennedy, and her son, Gideon Joseph Kennedy, included a special video compiled by friends and family and closed out with a performance by rocker Melissa Etheridge, People magazine reported.

The virtual service was a concession to social distancing requirements amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“While we’re not in the same space, we can’t hug or kiss, we’re not physically with each other, they’re still with us,” Mark Bailey, the husband of RFK daughter Rory Kennedy, said during the service. “And it means so much to us to have you here with us too.”

“And so through this nutty Zoom call, we’re going to share and touch and visit and shine a light on this love for Maeve and Gideon that hold us all together,” Bailey said.

McKeon and her young son went missing while rowing in the bay on April 2.

McKeon’s body was recovered three days later under 25 feet of water about 2.5 miles from her mother’s Shady Side home.

Gideon’s body was found Thursday about 2,000 feet from where his mother’s body was recovered.

McKeon’s husband, David, delivered the eulogy during Saturday’s virtual service.

“I had a crush on Maeve from the moment I met her,” he said, holding the couple’s son, Toby. “We said that we loved each other after dating for two weeks. I’ve been going back through old letters and we were talking about growing old together before we’d ever even moved into our first apartment.”

“That intense love never dulled,” he said. “It just grew. It got deeper and more complex and more complete.”

The broadcast included a performance of “Amazing Grace” by Natasha Bedingfield and Kenny Chesney, and closed out with Etheridge singing “Spirit in the Sky,” People said.
