A mayoral candidate in Kentucky was targeted in a shooting inside his campaign office Monday, police said.

The shooter walked into the Louisville office of candidate Craig Greenberg and squeezed off multiple shots, but the Democratic mayoral hopeful was not struck, Police Chief Erika Shields told WLKY.

One of the rounds fired, however, appeared to graze Greenberg’s clothing before he and his staff were “ushered away” from the building, Shields said. No injuries were reported.

The suspect — whose identity was not released — was apprehended outside Greenberg’s campaign office, police said.

It was not immediately clear whether the person had any previous ties to the politician, Shield said.

“We will need to allow the investigators to do the appropriate work,” the police chief told reporters. “We also have no reason to believe at this time that this individual was acting anything but alone.”

Shields noted that Greenberg is Jewish, although it’s unclear if his religion factored into the shooting or if he was potentially targeted due to the mayoral race.

“Right now, we are looking at this from all angles,” Shields said. “So until we can determine what the motivating factors were, we’re going to keep an open mind and proceed with abundance of caution and concern for many of our community members.”

David James, a Louisville council member, told WLKY News that he believed it was “an assassination attempt on Greenberg and his staff.”

In a statement to The Post, Louisville police confirmed it appeared Greenberg was the shooter’s “intended” target.

“A person of interest matching the suspect description was identified and taken into custody shortly after the incident,” department officials said in a statement. “Detectives are actively investigating, and more information will be forthcoming.”

FBI officials have been notified of the shooting, Shields said.

Greenberg, for his part, said he and his team were unharmed.

“We are all with LMPD now,” Greenberg tweeted. “I will provide an update as soon as possible. Thank you for the outpouring of support.”
