The Kentucky State Police trained its cadets using a slide show that quoted Adolf Hitler and Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee — as it encouraged them to “always fight to the death” on the job, according to a report.
“The very first essential for success is a perpetually constant and regular employment of violence,” the Führer wrote in his anti-Semitic screed “Mein Kampf,” which was included in the 33-page training slide titled “Violence of Action,” the Washington Post reported.
A student paper at Louisville’s duPont Manual High School first reported about the slide show Friday after receiving the material from a local lawyer who obtained it through an open records request for a lawsuit against the law enforcement agency.
State police said the training materials were old as Jewish groups, politicians and residents voiced their condemnation.
In a statement to the student paper, the Manual Redeye, Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear called the materials “unacceptable.”
“We will collect all the facts and take immediate corrective action,” he said, according to the Washington Post.
Kentucky police have been in the national spotlight since the shooting death of Breonna Taylor, a black EMT who was killed by Louisville cops during a botched raid on her apartment.
The state police assisted local authorities during ensuing protests and made a ballistics report in the incident.
The slide show includes the name of Curt Hall, a lieutenant who reportedly served as assistant commander at the police academy from 2005 to 2015 before working in internal affairs and recently retiring.
A Kentucky State Police training slide that includes an Adolf Hitler quoteHe did not immediately respond to a message from the Washington Post on Monday.
Morgan Hall, a spokesperson for the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, told the Redeye that the training materials haven’t been used since 2013.
“It is unacceptable that this material was ever included in the training of law enforcement,” Hall told the outlet. “Our administration does not condone the use of this material.”
The slide show included phrases such as: “A warrior must possess certain traits, protect certain things and have the courage to do both at all costs.”
It also includes a quote from Lee that promotes expressing masculinity above all else.
“Private and public life are subject to the same rules; truth and manliness will carry you through the world much better than policy, or tact, or expediency, or any other word that was ever devised to conceal a deviation from a straight line,” it said.
In a slide titled “Violence of Action,” Curt Hall wrote: “Be a loving father, spouse, and friend as well as the ruthless killer.”
A quote by Hitler said: “It is always more difficult to fight against faith than against knowledge.”
“Über Alles,” one slide said, referring to the German phrase meaning “above all else,” which has been widely associated with the Nazis.
The Anti-Defamation League said the organization was looking into the case, the Washington Post reported.
“It is entirely inexcusable for the words of Hitler to be used in training Kentucky State Police. ADL is actively working in the state to determine what happened and ensure it doesn’t happen again,” the group said.
