A Kentucky woman has been missing in the US Virgin Islands for four days — and authorities are desperately searching for leads before Tropical Storm Karen rolls into the region.
Lucy Schuhmann, 48, of Louisville, was reported missing on Thursday by the owner of a vacation rental where she was staying in Coral Bay on St. John, the Virgin Islands National Park said in a statement Sunday.
Schuhmann did not check out as scheduled, her belongings remained in her room and her rental Jeep was found at the Salt Pond parking area in the national park, the statement said.
Park staff, as well as the volunteer organization St. John Rescue and the Virgin Islands Police Department have been combing the region for Schuhmann — with both water and ground searches on the south shore.
A daypack belonging to Schuhmann was found on the Ram Head hiking trail, but it didn’t give any hints to her whereabouts, the statement said.
The search is set to continue Monday “as needed and as safe conditions allow” — with Tropical Storm Karen expected to bear down on the Virgin Islands late in the day.
Park officials have been in contact with Schuhmann’s relatives, and they are requesting privacy, the statement said.
