A condemned prisoner who murdered seven people had just one word to say when asked if he had a final statement before his execution by the state of Virginia this week: “Nope.”
Stone cold murderer Ricky Gray showed no emotion as he was escorted in handcuffs into the execution chamber Wednesday and administered a lethal injection of three drugs: midazolam, rocuronium bromide, and potassium chloride, NBC News reported.
For several minutes, Gray, 39, was taking deep breaths and snoring loudly before his body stopped moving. He was pronounced dead at 9:42 p.m. at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt, VA.
In Jan. 2006, Gray and his nephew, Ray Dandridge, went on a violent, drug-fueled rampage, killing seven people in under a week.
On New Year’s Day, they PCP and broke into the home of Kathryn and Bryan Harvey and their two daughters, Stella, 9, and Ruby, 4, CNN said.
The two men savagely beat the family with a hammer before tying them up and slashing their throats in the basement of their Richmond house. They also set the home on fire.
Gray later confessed to the murders, telling investigators, “They kept getting up and they was scaring me. I remember seeing the hammer and picking it up and then I don’t know who I hit first. I was just hitting them all with the hammer. All I know is, nobody was moving when I left out there.”
Several days later, Gray and Dandridge struck again, killing three more Richmond residents: Percyell Tucker, his wife, Mary Tucker and Mary’s daughter, Ashley Baskerville. He confessed to acting as a lookout in those attacks.
A Virginia jury sentenced Gray to death specifically for the murders of young Stella and Ruby.
Dandridge was sentenced to life in prison for the Baskerville-Tucker family killings.
