SYDNEY — Police say they shot a knife-wielding man after one person was fatally stabbed and two others were injured in the center of Australia’s second-largest city.

The man emerged from a car that then burst into flames, bringing central Melbourne to a standstill Friday afternoon.

Victoria state police Superintendent David Clayton said officers called to the scene were confronted by a man “brandishing a knife and threatening them,” and at the same time passers-by called out that people were stabbed.

One person was dead at the scene and two others were taken to a hospital. Clayton said police shot the man in the chest and he was in critical condition.

He said a bomb squad was making the scene safe and investigators were “keeping an open mind” as to motive.
