Wisconsin prosecutors blasted Kyle Rittenhouse Tuesday as a vigilante who was the only one — out of hundreds of other protesters at the chaotic demonstration last year — to open fire, leaving two men dead and injuring a third.

Rittenhouse, 18, who repeatedly yawned throughout the proceedings, faces seven charges, including homicide for fatally shooting Joseph Rosenbaum, 36, and Anthony Huber, 26, and attempted homicide for wounding Gaige Grosskreutz, 27 during the frenzy in Kenosha.

“We need to keep in mind the fact that there are hundreds of people on the street that are experiencing the same chaos, the same loud noises, the same gunfire, the same arson, the same tear gas, the same hostile confrontations with people who believe the opposite of them,” Kenosha County Assistant District Attorney Thomas Binger told jurors during opening statements.

“And yet, out of all of these hundreds of people, only one person killed anybody that night, only one person shot anyone that night.”

Rittenhouse, who was armed with an AR-15-style rifle, opened fire on the three men during unrest in Kenosha on Aug. 25, 2020, following the police shooting a few days earlier of Jacob Blake, a black man who was left paralyzed from the waist down.

Binger claimed that while it was unknown what was said that prompted the triple shooting, it was apparent that it caused the first person shot that night, Rosenbaum, to begin chasing Rittenhouse across the parking lot.

Rittenhouse shot Rosembaum twice in the lower extremities before firing at his back — then fled without rendering aid, the prosecutor said.

The shooting prompted the crowd to go after the armed teen, Binger said.”They clearly believe he’s an active shooter and they try and stop it,” he said.

While running away from the scene, Rittenhouse shot and killed Huber, who was seen on bystander video swinging a skateboard at him. He then wounded Grosskreutz, who had a gun in his hand as he approached the teen.

Defense attorney Mark Richards argued that his client acted out of self-defense in the series of shootings, claiming that it was Rosenbaum who “lit the fuse that night.”

Richards said the jury will learn from testimony “how Rittenhouse protected himself, protected his firearm so it wouldn’t be taken, used against him or other people” in the confrontation with Rosenbaum, who had thrown a plastic bag.

“The other individuals begin to see that shooting attack [Rittenhouse] in the street like an animal,” he said.

A jury was seated Monday comprising 11 women and nine men — eight of whom are alternates.

Judge Bruce Schroeder said the televised trial is expected to last just over two weeks.

Schroeder repeatedly stressed on Monday that jurors must reach a verdict solely on what they hear in the courtroom, cautioning, “This is not a political trial.”

“It was mentioned by both political campaigns and the presidential campaign last year, in some instances very, very imprudently,” he said.

He told the jurors that inaccurate information has been shared by people who “don’t know what you’re going to know.”

“Those of you who are selected for this jury, who are going to hear for yourselves the real evidence in this case,” he said.

If convicted of the top charge of intentional homicide, Rittenhouse faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
