The Los Angeles City Council president resigned from her top role Monday after being exposed for making racist comments about her colleague’s black son in a leaked recording.
Nury Martinez in a statement announced she would be stepping down from her position as president, but did not say she would resign her council seat.
The Democrat came under fire after a Los Angeles Times report on Sunday revealed she made derogatory remarks about fellow Councilmember Mike Bonin’s son, including calling the toddler “ese changito,” which means “that little monkey” in Spanish.
“I take responsibility for what I said and there are no excuses for those comments. I’m so sorry,” she said in the statement Monday. “As a mother, I know better and I am sorry. I am truly ashamed. I know this is the result of my own actions.”
A recording of Martinez’s conversation with other Latino leaders in which she made the comments was leaked and first published on Reddit.
In it, she said that Bonin’s kid — who was not even 3 years old at the time — “needs a beatdown” and is being raised like a “little white kid” by his white father.
“Let me take him around the corner and then I’ll bring him back,” the city council president said.
She also called the child “su negrito,” a derogatory Spanish word for a black person, and referred to Bonin as a “little bitch.”
Protesters had gathered outside Martinez’s home in LA on Sunday evening, following the Times’ report’s publication, and demanded that she step down.
“We can’t keep allowing these people to do whatever they want. it’s just blatantly disrespectful and it’s honestly just evil,” protestor Jackie Rodarte told CBS Los Angeles. “So that’s why we’re out here: because we want to let her know that she will not be sitting there for much longer and we will be getting her out of office.”
Rodarte was among a small group of people who chanted “Hey hey, ho ho, Nury Martinez has got to go” and held signs advocating for her to step down.
Bonin and his husband, Sean Arian, had issued a statement calling for Martinez and two other council members who were involved in the conversation to resign from their posts.
“The entirety of the recorded conversation … displayed a repeated and vulgar anti-Black sentiment, and a coordinated effort to weaken Black political representation in Los Angeles,” they said.
Martinez faced calls for her resignation from other council members as well, including Monica Rodriguez, who said the comments captured on tape were “vile and reprehensible.”
Three black members of the council, Curren Price, Heather Hutt and Marqueece Harris-Dawson, issued a joint statement saying a “facade” had come crashing down.
They said it was “a very dark day in LA politics for African-Americans, the LGBTQ+ community, Indigenous people and Angelenos who have put their faith in their local government.”
It is not clear who made the secret recording, which has not been reviewed by The Post. The person who posted it on Reddit has since been suspended.
The comments were made during an October 2021 meeting where some council members, including Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León, and a top LA County labor official were discussing proposed redistricting maps, according to the Times.

Nury Martinez’s comments were made during an October 2021 meeting. CBS News / LADuring the conversation, de León, who unsuccessfully ran for LA mayor and California state Senate, appeared to imply that Bonin treated his child like an accessory, like “when Nury brings her little yard bag or the Louis Vuitton bag.”
In an apology, he said: “I regret appearing to condone and even contribute to certain insensitive comments made about a colleague and his family in private.”
Cedillo issued a statement apologizing on Monday, saying, “While I did not engage in the conversation in question, I was present at times during this meeting last year. It is my instinct to hold others accountable when they use derogatory or racially divisive language. Clearly, I should have intervened.”
In response to the Times article, Bonin had said he was “speechless,” telling the newspaper, “It’s fair game to attack me, but my son? You have to be pretty petty and insecure and venomous to attack a child.”
Before announcing her resignation, Martinez issued a half-hearted apology Sunday, saying: “In a moment of intense frustration and anger, I let the situation get the best of me. I hold myself accountable for these comments. For that I am sorry.”
She used stronger language in her statement Monday, and directly apologized to Bonin for her comments about his son.

The LA Times Editorial Board called on Martinez to step down from the council Monday, saying “she should leave elected office immediately.”
“Martinez announced she would step down from her leadership position. But that is not enough,” the board wrote. “The casual racism and disregard for colleagues and constituents on the audio revealed a serious rot that cannot be papered over with apologies.”
Bonin echoed that sentiment on Twitter Monday. “The LA Times is calling for Nury Martinez, Kevin de León, and Gil Cedillo to resign. They must,” he wrote. “That’s where the accountability and healing Los Angeles desperately needs and deserves will begin.”
Martinez was elected to the council in 2013 and became the council’s first Latina president in 2020.
