Two FedEx big rigs collided, ripping open a trailer and dumping packages across the northbound 5 Freeway in Pacoima, forcing a full shutdown and wrecking the San Fernando Valley commute early Wednesday.

The crash was reported around 3:45 a.m., just south of the 118 Freeway, where one trailer split open and another cab spun out, blocking the middle lanes as boxes littered the rain-soaked roadway, KTLA reported.

Authorities have not said what caused the collision. But it happened as heavy rain began pounding Los Angeles County, creating slick, dangerous conditions in the dark.

The wreck triggered a full SigAlert, closing all northbound lanes, sending traffic grinding to a halt on the 5, 118 and nearby 405 Freeways.

Drivers may not be in the clear yet. The National Weather Service is forecasting 4 to 7 inches of rain across Valley areas through Friday.

A heavy-duty tow truck was called in to haul away the damaged big rigs as crews worked to clear debris and reopen lanes.
