The world’s leading cruise ship group wants to ban people over the age of 70 from setting sail without a doctor’s note amid the coronavirus outbreak, according to a report.

The Cruise Lines International Association proposed a plan to White House officials for the new policy, which would require elderly passengers to prove they are fit to travel, according to USA Today.

The new rules would also bar people with chronic medical conditions — who face a heightened risk of contracting the virus known as COVID-19 — from getting on a cruise ship, according to the outlet.

“We’ll be reviewing [the proposal] in the next 24 hours,” Vice President Mike Pence said at a press conference Tuesday night. “The president’s objective is for us to make cruise lines safer, even as we work with the cruise lines to ensure that — that no one in our particularly vulnerable population is — is going out on a cruise in the near future.”

But some companies have already adopted the new policy.

On Wednesday, Norwegian Cruise Line sent passengers an email saying that all guests over the age of 70 need to provide a certificate proving they are medically fit before boarding.
