Kansas Democrat Sharice Davids made history on Tuesday by becoming not only the state’s first openly gay woman of Congress but also the first Native American person elected on Tuesday.

Her campaign drew on negative attitudes toward President Trump in a district that Hillary Clinton won in 2016.

“Too many of us have gone through our entire lives not feeling seen and not feeling heard,” Davids said at a rally Monday night.

The member of the Ho-Chunk Nation had 53 percent of the vote compared with 44 percent for Kevin Yoder with 89 percent of the precincts reporting.
