A lightning strike on the Fourth of July injured as many as a dozen people near a South Carolina sand bar, according to reports.

The incident was reported around 2:10 p.m. Thursday near a river by the Lawshe Plantation, where a tree was struck by the lightning bolt, according to news station WPDE.

Emergency responders rushed three people to the hospital, including one who was critically injured. The two other victims were being treated for minor injuries, news station WCSC reported.

The National Weather Service initially reported that four people were unresponsive.
