Sen. Lindsey Graham is on board with a plan put forth by a fellow Republican that would let former national security adviser John Bolton’s forthcoming Trump administration tell-all book be reviewed in a closed Senate session.
“I totally support @SenatorLankford’s proposal that the Bolton manuscript be made available to the Senate, if possible, in a classified setting where each Senator has the opportunity to review the manuscript and make their own determination,” Graham tweeted Tuesday morning, referring to Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford.
Lankford on Monday said on Facebook that senators should be given access to the Bolton manuscript and he also urged Bolton to speak publicly about the matter, The Oklahoman reported.
“I think getting that information first-hand would be really important for us,” Lankford posted. “My encouragement would be: If John Bolton’s got something to say, there’s plenty of microphones all over the country that he should step forward and start talking about it right now.”
Graham’s tweet in support of Lankford’s proposal wasn’t the first time this week that the influential South Carolina Republican has expressed a desire to see Bolton’s manuscript.
Following Sunday’s New York Times report — which cited sources revealing that a manuscript of Bolton’s forthcoming book states that Trump told him in August 2019 that withholding military aid to Ukraine was tied to investigations into Democrats — Graham made it clear he wanted to hear more but has not been convinced that Bolton should necessarily be called as a witness in the Senate impeachment trial.
“Let’s see what’s in the manuscript, let’s see if it’s relevant, and if it is, I’ll make a decision about Bolton,” he said Monday.
Graham, who has become a staunch ally of Trump, has previously vowed to support the president in what he has described as a sham, partisan impeachment process.
John BoltonAP“I have made up my mind. I’m not trying to pretend to be a fair juror here,” the senator said back in December, adding, “This thing will come to the Senate, and it will die quickly, and I will do everything I can
.”
Graham has also defended Trump’s push for an investigation into Hunter Biden’s questionable business dealings in Ukraine while his father was vice president of the United States.
“Joe Biden is a dear friend,” the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman said, “[but] his son was receiving $50,000 a month from a gas company run by the most corrupt guy in the Ukraine and about two months after they raided the gas company’s president’s home, they fired the prosecutor.”
“Yeah, I think it’s OK to talk about this kind of stuff.”
