The terrorist attacks in Brussels as they unfolded:

  • At least 31 people died in two explosions at an airport and one explosion at a metro station in Brussels, Belgium, on Tuesday, March 22.
  • 11 people were reported dead in blasts at Brussels’ Zaventem airport and at least 20 died at the city’s Maelbeek metro station.
  • As many as 130 people were reported injured by the blasts.
  • Authorities locked down the city and raised its terror alert to the highest level. Arriving planes were diverted and citizens were ordered to remain indoors.

“It was atrocious. The ceilings collapsed. There was blood everywhere, injured people, bags everywhere. We were walking in the debris. It was a war scene.”

A European security official in contact with Belgian police says least one and possibly two Kalashnikov rifles have been found in the departure lounge at the Brussels airport after the attacks, AP reports.
